The Ruby Lake Nature Reserve is home to over 80 species of birds throughout the year, including one of the highest concentrations of wood ducks in British Columbia. Other birds that are commonly seen at the sanctuary include blue herons, bald eagles, tree swallows, kingfishers, hawks, ospreys, turkey vultures and hummingbirds. Every summer the Annual Wood Duck Wilderness Festival takes place at the Ruby Lake Nature Reserve.
Located on the Francis Peninsula, just west of Madeira Park, Francis Point Provincial Park was established in 2001 to protect a piece of waterfront that is home to an extremely sensitive and fragile ecosystem. This park offers a one-hour hiking trail and is a popular destination for kayakers, boaters and divers.
